As well as annual conferences, ESIL also holds an annual Research Forum, a scholarly event which promotes engagement with research in progress by members of the Society who are early-career scholars.

The ESIL Research Forum is a scholarly conference that promotes engagement with research in progress by members of the Society. It has a small and intensive format. The Forum targets in particular scholars at an early stage of their careers, especially advanced PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. Approximately 15 – 20 papers will be selected from among the submissions and, during the Forum, paper presenters will receive comments on their papers from members of the ESIL Board and invited experts.
ESIL members who wish to express interest in hosting a future Research Forum are asked to write to the ESIL President by the end of February in any given year. Previous research fora have been held in Florence (2015), Istanbul (2016), Granada (2017), Jerusalem (2018), Göttingen (2019) and Catania (2021). The 2023 Forum will be held in Tartu.
